REGION: SCOTLAND (ISLAY)
Never judge a book by its cover: this first class gin is made at Bruichladdich distillery using “Ugly Betty”, an old Scottish Lomond still so named for its crude, graceless shape. Despite its ungainly, unwieldy looks, Ugly Betty gives rise to an elegant, almost ethereal spirit, very much in the style of a London dry gin. No matter the season, this never fails to conjure a window-sill garden, with its floral and herbal notes, layers of aromatics and gorgeous complexity boosted by a generous 46% abv. Perfect in a dry martini, but equally inspired in a gin ‘Auld’-Fashioned with Earl Grey syrup, rose water and orange bitters.
